US Imposes Up to 100% Tariffs on Drones Citing Tech Security Risks

Date:

In a move driven by national security concerns, the United States has introduced tariffs of up to 100% on specific drone imports and components, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign supply chains heavily influenced by China. The new tariffs specifically target unmanned aircraft systems, with particular focus on larger drones that weigh over 25 kilograms and come equipped with capabilities relevant to national security, such as thermal cameras and docking stations. These will incur a full 100% tariff, while smaller drones will see a 25% tariff imposed.

Additionally, the US has decided to levy tariffs on drone products and components from several key trading partners. Imports from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff. Meanwhile, drones and components originating from the United Kingdom will be subject to a 10% tariff, as long as the hardware, software, and technology are sourced from the listed countries or the US itself. The majority of these tariffs are slated to be implemented starting September 3.

The White House has articulated that these measures are designed to bolster the US defense and industrial base, stimulate domestic drone manufacturing, and create jobs within the country, thereby decreasing reliance on international suppliers. Currently, China holds a significant position in the global drone market, with DJI, a company based in Shenzhen, capturing a substantial portion of the US commercial drone sector. DJI has previously faced US-imposed restrictions because of national security concerns.

US officials have raised alarms about potential risks posed by foreign-made drones, which could involve surveillance activities, the collection of sensitive data, and potential threats of attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has also advocated for increased domestic production of drones to mitigate such risks. This strategic move by the US comes amid ongoing trade and technology tensions with China, which has reciprocated by imposing its own restrictions on drone exports to the US and taking actions against several American companies.
