Poor Sleep Increases Heart Risk: 5 Habits for Better Rest

Date:

Consistently inadequate sleep can have significant consequences for heart health, according to research findings that highlight the importance of sufficient rest. During sleep, the body undergoes vital repair and restoration processes, including those critical to the cardiovascular system. However, when sleep is disrupted regularly, these processes may not function optimally, potentially leading to elevated blood pressure and increased stress hormone levels, such as cortisol.

Typically, blood pressure decreases during sleep, allowing the cardiovascular system to rest. Insufficient or poor-quality sleep can disrupt this pattern, keeping blood pressure elevated longer and placing additional strain on the heart and blood vessels. Over time, such disruptions can increase the risk of cardiovascular conditions, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

To support heart health and overall well-being, most adults benefit from 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. However, sleep quality and consistency are equally important. Even if the recommended duration is met, irregular sleep schedules may still impact how refreshed one feels and overall sleep quality.

Adopting healthy sleep habits can aid in achieving better rest. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day helps regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycle. Limiting caffeine intake later in the day and reducing screen exposure before bedtime can ease the transition into sleep. Creating a comfortable bedroom environment—dark, quiet, and cool—also promotes better sleep. Additionally, regular physical activity supports overall health and enhances sleep quality, though intense exercise should be avoided immediately before bedtime if it disrupts relaxation.

While occasional nights of poor sleep are common, consistently inadequate rest should not become the norm. Prioritizing sleep as part of a health routine can bolster cardiovascular health, improve energy levels, enhance concentration, and contribute to overall well-being. For those who struggle with sleep regularly or feel exhausted despite adequate time in bed, consulting a healthcare professional may be beneficial.
