The visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening strategic relationship between the two nations, which has evolved over many years through collaboration in political, economic, energy, and cultural spheres. Diplomatic relations between the UAE and Germany commenced in 1972 and have since flourished, with trade and investment emerging as key pillars of their partnership.
In the previous year, the bilateral trade between the two countries surpassed Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), establishing the UAE as Germany’s primary trading partner within the Gulf region. Approximately 2,000 German enterprises have established operations in the UAE, including prominent companies like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. The energy sector has also seen significant growth in cooperation, with both nations collaborating on initiatives related to renewable energy, climate action, decarbonization, and energy security.
A significant milestone in their energy collaboration was reached in 2022 when the UAE and Germany inked an agreement focused on enhancing energy security and industrial cooperation. This agreement encompasses UAE liquefied natural gas supplies to Germany and joint efforts on clean energy and climate-related projects.
The partnership between the UAE and Germany extends beyond trade and energy sectors, encompassing long-term cooperation in research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. In 2004, their political ties were formally elevated through a strategic partnership agreement that covers various areas, including regional security, economic cooperation, and research endeavors.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the relations between the UAE and Germany have remained robust. Both countries continue to expand their cooperation across strategic sectors, underscoring the resilience and depth of their partnership.
