UN’s Digital Mapping Technology Highlights Disputed Northern Islands of Japan

Date:

A new world map using the Equal Earth projection has ignited controversy due to its portrayal of certain territories, prompting Japan to call for changes regarding the depiction of the Kuril Islands. This projection aims to present the sizes of continents more accurately than the widely used Mercator projection. Consequently, Africa appears much larger, while Europe and North America are depicted as smaller compared to their sizes on traditional maps.

The Japanese government has raised concerns about how the Kuril Islands, referred to in Japan as the Northern Territories, are represented. The map shows these islands in the same color as Russia, which Japan argues could mislead viewers about the territorial dispute. The Kuril Islands form a chain that stretches between northern Japan and Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, a region embroiled in a longstanding territorial dispute that continues to hold geographic and historical significance.

This issue underscores the impact map design can have on perceptions of borders, territories, and geographical claims. Different mapping projections can alter the visual representation of countries and continents without affecting their actual size or location. The Equal Earth projection was created to offer a more balanced view of global land areas, unlike the Mercator projection, which often enlarges regions near the poles disproportionately.

The controversy surrounding the new map highlights that maps are more than just navigational tools; their design elements, such as colors, borders, and labels, can convey cultural and political meanings, especially in areas with contested boundaries. For those interested in geography and travel, this new map projection provides a fresh perspective, illustrating how the appearance of well-known locations can change significantly depending on the mapping system employed.
