Advanced Missile Technology Hits UAE Tankers in Strait, One Dead, Eight Hurt

Date:

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalated following a deadly attack on two oil tankers operated by the United Arab Emirates. According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, the tankers, named Mombasa and Al Bahyah, were hit by Iranian cruise missiles while navigating the southern stretch of this critical maritime route. Tragically, an Indian crew member aboard the Mombasa lost his life, and eight others sustained injuries, with four of those injuries classified as severe.

The UAE has denounced the missile strike as a grave breach of international law, emphasizing the threat it poses to regional stability and the safety of maritime navigation. Both vessels suffered substantial damage due to the assault, sparking further concerns about the security of oil shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a pivotal conduit for global energy supplies.

Efforts to account for the crews of the damaged vessels revealed that 18 crew members from Al Bahyah were rescued, while three are still unaccounted for, as confirmed by Oman’s Maritime Security Centre. In total, 30 out of the 46 crew members aboard the two tankers were of Indian nationality. The Indian government has expressed its condemnation of the attack, extended condolences for the loss of life, and is actively coordinating with local authorities to provide assistance to those affected.

The incident has exerted upward pressure on global oil prices, pushing them to a four-week high. The heightened risk to shipping in the region has added to the volatility in energy markets, reflecting the broader implications of security threats in this vital oil transit corridor.
