The United Arab Emirates is in a period of mourning following the passing of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a prominent figure in Dubai’s leadership and community. His death has led to a 10-day mourning period in Dubai, reflecting his significant contributions to the emirate’s development and the UAE at large.
Sheikh Ahmed, who passed away on Monday, was a key player in Dubai’s law enforcement and business sectors, serving as deputy chairman of Dubai Police and chairman of ARM Holding. His impact extended into sports, where he was instrumental in establishing the Jebel Ali Racecourse in 1990 and served as the longstanding president of Al Wasl Sports Club, fostering sports culture in the region.
Following his funeral at Zabeel Grand Mosque, Sheikh Ahmed was laid to rest at Umm Hurair Cemetery in Dubai. The solemn occasion drew the presence of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other Emirati rulers and crown princes, who gathered at the Zabeel Majlis to express their condolences to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai.
The gathering included notable leaders such as Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi of Sharjah, Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi of Fujairah, Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla of Umm Al Quwain, and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi of Ras Al Khaimah. Together, they paid tribute to Sheikh Ahmed’s lifelong dedication to advancing the UAE since its formation.
