Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport is embarking on an ambitious project to create a 50-kilometer autonomous people mover network. This expansive underground driverless rail system aims to transport passengers seamlessly across the sprawling airport complex via nine stations. The construction is scheduled to reach completion by December 2031, setting the stage for the airport’s first phase opening in 2032.
Upon completion, this network is poised to become the world’s largest automated people mover system, surpassing current airport transit systems like those at Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK airports. As further phases of the airport development unfold, the system is expected to expand to 14 stations, enhancing connectivity across the entire airport.
Al Maktoum International Airport is being designed with the capacity to accommodate up to 260 million passengers and handle 12 million tonnes of cargo each year. The initial phase of development will feature the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the new people mover system, which will collectively boost the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 130 million.
In addition to the internal transit improvements, the airport will benefit from enhanced rail connectivity. Plans include an Airport Express Link designed to connect Al Maktoum International Airport with Dubai International Airport. Future expansions also envision links to Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro, further integrating the airport into the region’s transportation network.
