Following a VAR review that upheld the referee’s decision, Haaland stepped up to convert the penalty, reaching the milestone of 150 goals for Manchester City and ending a three-match goal drought while taking his season tally to 20 Premier League goals.
City threatened to extend their advantage early in the second half when Bernardo Silva capitalised on a Brighton defensive error, but his effort cannoned off the woodwork. The match saw a controversial moment when City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper became involved in a heated exchange, with both receiving yellow cards.
Brighton drew level on the hour mark through Kaoru Mitoma, who displayed composure and quality to guide a low shot into the bottom corner from just outside the box. The Japanese winger received a pass from wide and carefully positioned himself before finding the far corner with a precise finish that changed the dynamics of the match.
After equalising, Brighton dominated proceedings and came close to snatching a winner when Mitoma’s angled shot from near the byline struck the post. Late drama ensued when Haaland had only Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to beat, but the Dutch shot-stopper produced an excellent save to deny the Norwegian and preserve the draw, leaving City frustrated and facing serious questions about their ability to challenge for the title.
