Iran Conflict’s Tech Impact May Challenge Wall Street’s Bull Market

Date:

The ongoing conflict in Iran is exerting new inflationary pressures on the United States, primarily through increased energy costs and disruptions in global supply chains. This situation raises the possibility that higher interest rates could eventually impact Wall Street’s robust stock-market rally. A significant immediate effect has been observed around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy passage, where disruptions have led to reduced oil flows. Consequently, crude prices have surged, escalating gasoline and diesel costs for American consumers and adding to the overall inflationary pressure.

While oil prices have recently moderated amid growing hopes for negotiations, several other inflationary drivers persist. Rising transportation costs, supply chain disruptions, and increased prices for petroleum-based products could continue to elevate the costs of goods and services. Additionally, the conflict’s impact could extend to sectors like agriculture and technology. Fertilizer supply disruptions may heighten food production costs, and helium shortages, crucial for semiconductor manufacturing, could inflate costs within the chip industry.

The Federal Reserve faces a critical challenge with underlying inflation remaining high even as energy prices stabilize. Persistent core inflation could constrain the central bank’s capacity to lower interest rates and might necessitate tighter monetary measures if price pressures intensify. Such a scenario would pose further difficulties for companies, particularly within the technology and AI sectors, where substantial investments are ongoing in data centers, chips, and other infrastructure. Higher borrowing costs could decelerate investment and exert pressure on AI stocks, which are notably highly valued.

Given that AI-related companies have been pivotal in driving the US stock-market rally, any slowdown in AI investments or a decline in the valuations of high-growth technology stocks could negatively affect major stock indexes. The primary concern for investors is whether the inflation spurred by the conflict is temporary or could permeate the broader economy. If supply disruptions endure and core inflation remains elevated, higher interest rates could create a more challenging environment for Wall Street, potentially jeopardizing the momentum of the current bull market.
