The United Arab Emirates celebrated a historic victory at the 2026 Asian Games as 18-year-old Mariam Kareem clinched the gold medal in the women’s 400m hurdles. Kareem’s remarkable performance set a new Asian Games record with a time of 54.31 seconds, edging out Kazakhstan’s Adelina Zems by 0.27 seconds. India’s Vithya Ramraj secured the bronze in a competitive field.
This triumph marks the UAE’s first gold medal at the Games and their second medal in athletics overall. Earlier in the competition, 19-year-old Sulaiman Abdulrahman earned a silver medal in the men’s 400m final, clocking in at 44.99 seconds.
Kareem’s achievement was not only a personal best but also a significant improvement from her qualifying time of 55.14 seconds. Her success is a testament to her dedication and skill, drawing congratulations from UAE Athletics Federation President Major General Dr Mohammed Abdullah Al Murr.
