Why a GI Doc Says Beetroot is a “Must-Eat” for Your Liver

A specialist in digestion and liver health has singled out beetroot as a “must-eat” vegetable for liver health, including it in a list of seven powerful foods. This root vegetable offers a unique, dual-action benefit for the organ.
The expert explains that beetroots are “loaded with nitrates and betaine.” The nitrates are crucial for supporting the body’s nitric oxide pathways, which promote healthy blood flow. This ensures the liver is well-nourished and can perform its functions.
The second compound, betaine, is highlighted as a nutrient that “helps the liver process and move fat out of liver cells.” This action is critical for preventing the buildup of fat in the liver, a common health concern.
The doctor’s list also includes other powerful foods. Cranberries are praised for their prebiotic role in the gut-liver axis. Raspberries are noted for their fiber and anthocyanins, which help regulate blood sugar and fat processing.
Pomegranates (for inflammation), watermelon with lime (for additional blood flow support), and apples with cinnamon (for insulin sensitivity) also make the list. Finally, strawberries with 70% dark chocolate are recommended for their blood-vessel-supporting flavanols.
